Tuning in to Kids®
Build Connection. Foster Emotional Intelligence.
At Guidestar Psychology, we’re proud to offer the evidence-based Tuning in to Kids® program — designed to support parents and carers of children aged 5 to 12 in understanding and responding to their child’s emotional world in a meaningful and effective way.
This 6-week parenting course runs once a week for 2 hours, providing practical, supportive, and transformative strategies for families. It is one of the few evidence-based parenting programs proven to strengthen the parent–child relationship.
Who It’s For
Tuning in to Kids® is for parents and carers of Primary Kids (up to 12-year-olds) who would like to learn how to respond in a healthy way to their child’s emotions.
What You’ll Learn
Over six weeks, parents and carers will learn how to:
- Recognise and respond to children’s emotions before they escalate
- Accept and validate their child’s emotional experience
- Support children to name and understand their emotions
- Help children manage difficult feelings constructively
- Problem-solve effectively when challenges arise
Parents also reflect on their own emotional responses and learn how to model healthy emotion regulation in everyday parenting.
Why It Matters
Children who develop strong emotional skills are better equipped to navigate friendships, school life, and mental health challenges as they grow. Research shows that parenting support programs such as Tuning in to Kids® not only reduce emotional and behavioural difficulties but also deepen the connection between parent and child.
Parents often report:
- Improved communication with their children
- Greater emotional closeness
- More confidence in managing tricky moments
- Feeling calmer and more supported in their parenting
How We Help
Our psychologists help you support your children as they develop emotional intelligence and social skills, helping you navigate kids’ big emotions and challenging behaviours.
What to Expect
Our experienced psychologists work with small groups. With other parents, you will learn how to use the practical skills of emotion coaching to help children regulate and manage behaviours. These skills help your child respond to others in socially appropriate ways.
Small group sizes ensure a supportive, personalised training experience. We require at least 4 enrolments to run a group and numbers are limited to 10 participants.
The fee for 6 group sessions is $300 per person. This must be paid prior to the group sessions commencing. Please note, a Medicare rebate may be applied if you (the parent or carer) have a Mental Health Treatment Plan.
You may request a refund within 7 days of purchase, provided you have not commenced the course. Once you have started the course, you are no longer eligible for a refund and no refund will be provided.
A Certificate of Completion will be provided upon successful completion of the whole program. If you are unwell or unable to attend one of the scheduled sessions you will not receive a Certificate of Completion.
