Tuning in to Teens®

Build Connection. Foster Emotional Intelligence.

At Guidestar Psychology, we’re proud to offer the evidence-based Tuning in to Teens® program — that teaches parents and carers emotion coaching skills while focusing on the developmental needs of teenagers (12 – 18 years old). There is a greater emphasis on acceptance/empathy and helping parents and carers to manage their own responses when adolescents reject or push them away as they seek greater autonomy.

This 6-week parenting course runs once a week for 2 hours and supports parents as their children enter the tumultuous phase of adolescence, characterised by significant changes in physical development with puberty, cognitive growth, greater emotional volatility and personality formation as they establish their distinct identities. The core concept underpinning the course involves the idea that adolescents enhance their ability to understand emotional experiences and regulate their reactions when their parents address challenging emotions of moderate to low intensity. This involves offering support, comfort, and guidance to help teenagers learn about and manage their emotions.

Who It’s For

Tuning in to Teens® is for parents and carers of 12 to 18-year-olds learning to manage their own and their teen’s emotions in ways that support healthy communication and emotional intelligence.

What You’ll Learn

The program focuses on teaching you how to:

  • Improve communication and reduce conflict
  • Support your teen’s emotional intelligence and well-being
  • Strengthen family relationships and bonds
  • Respond effectively to emotional outbursts and challenging behaviours

Why It Matters

Tuning into Teens shows you how to help your teen to develop emotional intelligence. Research shows teens with higher emotional intelligence:

  • have more stable and satisfying relationships as adults,
  • are able to deal with peer pressure better,
  • are more able to cope positively when upset or angry,
  • have fewer mental health issues and substance abuse difficulties.

How We Help

Our psychologists help you to enhance communication with adolescents in your care. This process can help them achieve positive health and social outcomes in lots of aspects of their lives.

What to Expect

Our experienced psychologists work with small groups. With other parents, you will learn how to use the practical skills of emotion coaching to help children regulate and manage behaviours. These skills help your child respond to others in socially appropriate ways.

Small group sizes ensure a supportive, personalised training experience. We require at least 4 enrolments to run a group and numbers are limited to 10 participants.

The fee for 6 group sessions is $300 per person. This must be paid prior to the group sessions commencing. Please note, a Medicare rebate may be applied if you (the parent or carer) have a Mental Health Treatment Plan.

You may request a refund within 7 days of purchase, provided you have not commenced the course.  Once you have started the course, you are no longer eligible for a refund and no refund will be provided.

A Certificate of Completion will be provided upon successful completion of the whole program. If you are unwell or unable to attend one of the scheduled sessions you will not receive a Certificate of Completion.
